SEPTEMBER
Our themes for September are summer, school routines and friends. During our first few days of school we will read books about summer and we will ask your child to reflect upon his summer activities. It is difficult for three and four year olds to reflect upon what's occurred in the past - even the very recent past, but this is a critical skill for problem solving and reading comprehension. It is a skill that we will be developing throughout the school year. The next week we will focus on breaking down our school routines so that everyone can eventually do them independently. There is so much to learn! Our main routines are: arrival, toileting, hand washing, transitioning between activities (usually cued by a song), circle time, snack, lining up and walking in line, play time, clean up, after snack quiet time (books, puzzles, or resting for a few minutes), and dismissal. We will focus on friendship during the last two weeks of September. We will learn that friends play and work together, help and are kind to each other, share with and listen to each other.
During September we will introduce the numbers and numerals zero and one; the colors yellow, red and blue; and the shapes circle and oval. The calendar will also be introduced. Throughout the year children will learn that we have seasons, months, weeks, days and dates. They will also learn about yesterday, today and tomorrow. These are difficult concepts for preschoolers to grasp.
OCTOBER
Our themes for October are fall, farm and Halloween. We will learn about the signs of fall during the first half of the month. Then we will shift our focus to the farm. We will discover that most of our food comes from farms. We will also learn about farm animals. The last few days of the month will be directed toward Halloween. We will learn that we pretend when we dress up in costumes. We will also learn about symbols associated with Halloween: jack-o-lanterns, witches, black cats, etc. Please come to see our costume parade.
