Use and Misuse of Antibiotics and Antibacterial Agents : Web Quest
created by Mr. Clarke 2/2007
Introduction:
Attention students: In the fall of 2006 the high school experienced a bacterial outbreak of E. coli. The contamination of this pathogen was isolated to the water source from the school's well. (Remember pathogens are any bacterium, virus, or microorganism that causes disease.) Once the source of the contaminant was located, steps were taken to permanently chlorinate the water system. During this time students were not able to wash their hands with soap and water, but instead used antimicrobial hand sanitizers such as “Purell” to prevent bacterial infections. Is the use of these commercial antibacterial products helpful or harmful? Are there other methods to fight bacterial infections? Are there potential dangers from using those other methods?
Task:
You are asked to work in groups of two to discover, collect, and analyze information obtained by participating in the Use and Misuse of Antibiotics and Antibacterial Agents Web Quest. Then use your previously learned knowledge of bacteria and the information revealed from this inquiry to create a summary outline As the expert panel you will use this outline in a debate presentation that will be videotaped for possible use in a cable access community service piece that centers on the Use and Misuse of Antibiotics/ Antibacterial Agents
