The Project CLEAR grant was awarded to implement inquiry-based environmental education program in the schools and communities surround Candlewood Lake to foster widespread support for and involvement in watershed protection programs.  Project CLEAR objectives are:
To provide students, teachers, community leaders and residents with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, skills, and commitment to protect and improve the Candlewood Lake watershed area.
To pilot a learner-centered K-12 education program, emphasizing hands-on, minds-on investigation of local watershed conservation issues.
To develop a knowledgeable, skilled and active citizenry empowered to act responsibility to prevent and address current and future watershed management issues.
To disseminate best practices to schools and communities throughout the watershed region and the state.
To stimulate interest in environmentally related careers through guided field experiences, career forums and job shading experience and internships.

We have identified and utilized this grant in three major areas; teacher training, infusion of Project WET activities into the curriculum and a Community Out-Reach Program.  The last objective will be continued into 2003.

We have provided teacher training, materials, and field activities in order to effectively infuse Project WET activities into our Science curriculum.  This has enabled the development and delivery of an inquiry-based Science curriculum.  As a result, this has enabled our students to develop essential critical analysis and problem-solving skills, which are consistent with, state standards and grade specific science criterion reference test content.

In addition, we are in the process of developing a complete and inclusive program of community outreach activities designed to include all sectors of our community.  Involvement in educational and field activities are essential for the study and preservation of Candlewood Lake.

Currently, there is a year round schedule of activities and community educational programs which is designed to include all sectors of the New Fairfield community from pre-school to adults. This has enabled us to begin a historical study of Lake Candlewood water quality.  It also has resulted in a universal educational program in these towns, which will allow us to preserve this resource.

We view this grant/endeavor as the initial phrase in our long-term vision.  The New Fairfield School System is committed to meeting and surpassing all the grant activities and will continue to pursue every avenue to enable us to carry on this most valuable work with the surrounding lake communities and school districts.  These initiatives will build closer working relationships with the communities, local agencies and other school districts, which will create a win-win situation for everyone.
